Impress Your Customers by Making Your Holiday Greetings More Personal

By: John Oberhauser

The holidays are rapidly approaching and many businesses will use boxed greeting cards as a way to impress their clientele. Unfortunately, the process of picking out just the right card design, preparing the mailing list and actually getting them mailed can be a daunting task. With a little forethought and planning, it doesn’t have to be. A little extra personal touch can go a long way towards impressing your clients. Following are some guidelines and advice for turning your holiday mailing into a successful event.

Pick a mailing date and work backwards allowing yourself enough time to finish the job comfortably. Aim to mail them right after the Thanksgiving Holiday. This has become the accepted beginning of the holiday season and few would find it unusual to receive cards at this time. In addition, many of us display the cards we receive so why not have yours hanging on a clients wall a bit longer. After all, the idea is to get your name out there.

Buy Quality Cards. We can’t say enough about this. Cheap cards look, well… cheap. A well made, quality card will infer that you value your client and his business. There are many cards out there that are a step above the standard four color, flat printed cards. Many have foil accents or die-cut shapes. This also helps your greeting stand out against the crowd.

Keep it appropriate. Show that you respect you client’s beliefs by choosing a card with an appropriate theme. It may take a little more work than just picking and sending any old card, but it is important to show your client that you actually thought about them as individuals. Boxed holiday cards are sold in small increments, so you could get a couple of different designs to represent different traditions. If you are unsure if the recipient celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah or another religious faith or tradition, choose a neutral card with a general winter image and a greeting of Happy Holidays or Season’s Greetings.

Make it personal. A few extra personal touches can really make an impact. Anything that shows that you put a little extra time and effort into your greeting will make the recipient feel that much more appreciated. Even though we all know we are not the only one receiving a card from you, we like to think that we a special and these small tips can help. Here are a few suggestions but don’t limit you imagination to just these.

- Write the recipient’s name inside the card.

- Write a short note wishing them well or thanking them for their business.

- Sign your name even if it is preprinted in the card.

- Handwrite the address. Avoid computer generated labels. These make your greeting look like a mass mailing.

Use common sense. Like everything else you do in business, your greeting has to perform. A poorly done advertising piece that gets trashed immediately is a waste of resources. Your greeting card needs to be recognized and appreciated to be effective. A few common sense ideas to help your greeting card impress and to make thing a little less stressful on you:

- Make sure your mailing list is up to date with the correct names and address. It is best to do this throughout the year so that it doesn’t become a huge chore later on. Set up a database just for greeting cards. Add new contacts throughout the year. Make address changes as you receive them.

- Give yourself plenty of time to get the cards signed, addressed and to the post office. Enlisting the help of others and assigning specific tasks will help divide up the job and make it less onerous for everyone. Avoid the last minute rush at the post office.

- Be sensitive to traditions. In this day of political correctness, it is more difficult not to offend someone. Let them know you value them by doing a little research or by choosing a neutral design.

- Make it personal. Nothing shows that you care like a little personal attention. A little bit can go a long way.
