Intelligent Engines

By: Jodie Gray McCallister

The eighties has been a good transition point for many, when the cult of American Top 40 went global. It has also been the time when great advances in globalizing motor trends have taken place, carrying with it the unwanted boon of pollution and environmental damage. Just a few decades ago, it is quite a rarity to find anybody who cares about our environment as much as we do now. Presently, we can only look back and cringe at the time we cared more about how big our hairs are than if what we are doing is hurting the environment or not.

Car manufacturers have now taken heed to the call for more environmental friendly systems for our vehicles. At present, almost every car maker has sustainable development embedded within its DNA. Among the car manufacturing giants, Japanese car maker Honda blazes the trail with new innovations that does not compromise being nature friendly. For many months now, the company has received numerous awards and citations for its cars not only for exceptional performance but for its fuel economy and reduced emissions as well.
Two of the more popular “green” engines launched by Honda are the i-DSI engine and the i-VTEC engine.

The i-DSI Engine

The name i-DSI stands for Intelligent- Dual and Sequential Ignition. This type of engine is commonly found in City and Jazz models. This engine features cleaner exhaust gas emissions because of its efficient combustion. This type of engine produces high output with minimal fuel with its two-spark plug per cylinder feature, enabling rapid combustion of the air-fuel mixture.

The i-VTEC Engine

A few years ago Honda came with the VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) engine which was the worlds first valve mechanism capable of simultaneously changing the valve timing and lift on the intake and exhaust sides. It has been an innovation praised and appreciated by many in the motoring industry. This engine is currently available in the 1.8 SOHC and 2.0 DOHC Civic; 2.4 and 3.0 V6 Accord and in the CRV. This is dubbed as the more intelligent incarnation of the VTEC engine which supports a more global thrust toward environmental conservation.

I, for one, see this growing interest on environmental care among car manufacturers as a promise that in the future there will be more advanced vehicles designed to perform better without hurting the environment. Indeed, technology must be harnessed as a means of improving function without compromising the ecosystem. The technology that blends seamlessly to ones lifestyle without posing any threat to the environment is definitely a vision worth toiling for.
