The Potential Side Effects Of Botox - What You Should Know

By: Dr Vincent T

During clinical trials, the most frequent adverse reactions after injections of Botox were discovered to be headache, nausea, flu-like symptoms, respiratory infection, and eyelid drooping.

Some less frequent adverse reactions included redness and swelling at the injection site, facial pain, tingling sensation and muscle weakness. Naturally we shouldn't be surprised at weakness of the injected muscles because this is what Botox is meant to do. However, occasionally local spreading can lead to weakness of the adjacent muscles. Fortunately these side effects were generally transient, but there is a possibility that they may last as long as a few months.

When used in the real life, temporary eyelid drooping were reported in roughly 5% of patients according to the literature. Other adverse reactions that have been found since Botox has gone on sale are blurred eyesight, tummy pain, decreased hearing, diarrhoea, noise in the ear, pyrexia, focal numbness, loss of appetite, feeling weak, glaucoma, myalgia, focal facial paralysis, erythema multiforme, itchiness, psoriasiform eruption, retinal vein occlusion, myasthaenia gravis and fainting.

Of course, we must be aware that these reactions are volunteered in a non-controlled environment, so whether these are directly caused by remains unclear. In addition, the incidence of these side effects cannot be reliably estimated.

In very rare cases, there have been anecdotes of sudden death, which can be associated with anaphylaxis, dysphagia and/ or serious pneumonia. Other almost unheard of severe adverse reactions include myocardial infarction, arrhythmia and/ or seizure.

If you be frightened by this article, don't. The truth is, more than 99% of people will never suffer from these severe side effects, and continue to improve their looks through Botox. In any case, since Botox only linger in your system up to a maximum of 6 months, any adverse reactions will disappear in due course.
