Tips for Staying Young

By: Debra Thompson

We all grow old, so there is no need to sweat it. Most traditional communities treat their elders with great respect. Regretably, our television and movie driven society is focused on youthful appearance, and leaves women especially vulnerable to fears about aging. When the focus on youth results in endangering health over time, we should re-examine our priorities.

Who won't want to look their best? Don't fault your genes if poor decisions are the cause. Even genetic proclivities to early aging can be overly expedited by foolish health choices. For the key to health, knowledge is power, that is, if you put it into action - the sooner the better!

Making some easy to implement changes can make the difference in looking and feeling older than you are. Get started by following a few easy to implement principles.

If you smoke, quit. Smoking is one of the major causes of premature aging in women — to list just one consequence. Smoking will fill your system with toxins that build up with time, and the consequences will show in your skin.

Trim those portions. Most of us way over eat. Requiring the body to work too hard digesting too much food can wear it out prematurely. The more excess fat we carry with us, the more we wear down our bodies. Your body will tell you what it needs if you will be sensitive to it. It has been proven that occasional fasting is good for one's system.

Avoid commercial tanning beds at all costs. The skin is your largest organ - handle it with care. It's normal to not have a tan in the winter months. Get your tan outdoors, and go easy on it.

Understand the side-effects that prescribed drugs have on you, especially the way they interact. There is no one out there who has a better reason for understanding what effects medications have on your body.

Get fit! Nothing will make you look older than being overweight and out of shape. So get a move on. Start a regular walking course, or start toning, or get a Pilates DVD and use it regularly and you’ll retard the aging process. Salsa dancing or jogging are good choices. There are several programs available for those with physical limitations. Check with your local hospital. Looking great and feeling even better - now there's a bargain!

Get sufficient rest. Sleep is where our body rejuvenates (”restores youth”) itself. It’s crucial to get adequate and effective sleep if you want to fight premature aging. Don’t skimp on sleep. Get enough sleep and stay on a regular schedule.

We have to accept the ravages of getting older, but we don't need to accelerate them. Premature aging can be avoided.
