Treat Your Car's Body With Special Care

By: Shane Rethwisch

You don't want to have to look at your once-shiny new car and see all the dents and dings from that time you backed into the mailbox or that time another car bumped you at a stoplight. If you've had good body shop work done on your car previously, then you have an idea where to go if you need it done again. If your car was damaged in an accident, you may need to take it to a specific place or to one on of a list of places approved by your insurance company.

Quality Means the World

If you can choose who will repair your car, there are several things to consider in order to ensure that the work is well-done, and the car is properly repaired. Your auto shop's quality is an important factor to consider. Is the auto shop kept up? Do you see cars around that seem to have been there for weeks or months? Do the mechanics look like they are working? Avoid auto repair shops that appear to keep cars on the premises for long periods of time, or ones that look overly messy and chaotic.

Inspect the work done to your car before leaving the shop so you can be sure the work was performed properly and you have gotten what you paid for. Never deem a job as "completed" until the repairs have been made in full and the car runs to your satisfaction. Since the money for these repairs comes out of your pocket, make sure you're not getting shoddy, second-rate, or incomplete work. Being selective is the best way to make sure you and your car aren't ripped off.

Credibility Is Key

Talk to the owner of the body shop about the business' priorities. Is quality something that is important to the shop in question? Does their work carry a guarantee? Are the employees certified auto mechanics? Explain to them what your car is like and how much you need your car. They need to know how important a properly running car is to you. Choose a repair shop with which you can be confident that your car will receive professional attention to its needs. Ensure that the company will stand behind its work, and see if you can get some references.

Upon deciding which repair shop to use, inspect your car before and after the repair, both by yourself and accompanied by the shop’s inspector. This will ensure that all agreed upon changes to your car have been completed, and also that no additional damage has occurred. Your car might be unintentionally damaged at the repair shop without your knowledge, since the repairmen have strong a incentive not to tell you; they may be fined or fired if the damage is known. This happens, unfortunately, much more often than you might think.

Take care when choosing an auto repair shop. When considering a repair shop, look for cars on the lot that have already been repaired, so you can evaluate the quality of workmanship. Dirty or disorganized places don't deserve your business. Employ sound judgment and conduct some research. It is up to you to take car of your car, because it is one of your greatest investments. Not only did you pay a considerable amount of money to purchase it, but it is also the keeper of you and your loved ones safety as you travel.
