What To Eat When Breastfeeding
It is pretty easy... just follow the steps below for a healthy mommy and baby...
• Continue to take your pre-natal vitamins long after you have delivered. To make nutrition for your baby – you both need extra nutrients.
• Eat regularly. It is important to not skip meals when you are breastfeeding. Ideally, you should eat several small meals over the course of the day to keep up your energy.
• Add in plenty of fruits and vegetables to your meals. Nursing moms should consume five portions of fruits and vegetables daily. Don’t forget to add the colorful items for extra nutrition!
• Get enough protein. Fish, chicken and lean meats will help you maintain a well balanced diet. If you do not consume meat protein, be sure to eat enough nuts and legumes (beans) to get the protein you need to aid in milk production.
• Consume high fiber foods. Wholegrain breads and pastas will provide you with the extra energy that you need to breastfeed.
• Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. This will help prevent dehydration since you are losing fluids during breastfeeding. This is very important as reduced liquid intake will result in lower volume of breast milk.
• Watch out for caffeine in the liquids and foods you consume – caffeine can stay in your baby’s system much longer than in your own!
• Watch out for foods that can cause allergies in your baby. Some items, like peanuts, may cause a reactions in some breastfed babies; mothers often choose to avoid them while breastfeeding. Also watch for foods you ingest that make baby's gas worse - like cabbage and milk.
